Welcome back to What Do You Want to Be? I'm Mark. And I'm Joy. Today, we're talking to someone whose office is 30,000 feet in sky.

0:09

Please welcome our friend, world traveler, Brenda, who is a flight attendant. Hi, Brenda.

0:14

Hi, Joy and Mom. Thanks for having me. I'm actually excited to be here.

0:17

Well, let's get started with the interview questions. Joy?

0:21

What's the coolest place you've ever traveled into for your drop-up?

0:26

I think for me it would be Greece because if you actually look down or look at pictures of Greece,

0:35

the buildings in Greece are actually blue and white for some reason and it's actually very satisfying to just look at it.

0:43

Hmm. What's the... Is your job mostly serving snacks and drinks or is there more to it?

0:52

Believe it or not, there is actually more to it. I'd say snacks and drinks is part of it,

1:00

but serving the passengers and also managing their children is another thing.

1:07

And that's something I enjoy.

1:11

What's the most important role on an airplane that kids should know?

1:18

I believe it would be to not run around on an airplane, especially when the crew is walking

1:23

because we're going to be pushing out our carts, we'll be carrying a lot of things

1:27

and we don't want mishaps to happen so we don't want kids to just hit onto the carts

1:34

neither do we want to hit them by accident.

1:37

Those carts can be pretty painful because they're made of metal, aren't they?

1:42

Have you ever had a really funny or silly thing happen on a flight?

1:50

I do have a lot of things that happen on a flight, but one thing I really enjoy is that

1:57

when I meet kids, they tend to be very open and they start to show me magic tricks

2:05

or they could just start singing, it's sort of like showing off their talent

2:10

and that's something really enjoyable and it's really fun to actually see kids doing it.

2:16

What do you do when the airplane hits turbulence? Does it scare you?

2:24

Actually it does scare me, but because we are trained to make sure that we are safe

2:32

so what we do, we immediately squat down low

2:36

and that way when the turbulence hit, we won't really fly off

2:42

so that we'll be more balanced when we just crouch down low.

2:49

What's the hardest part about being a flight attendant?

2:54

I think for me the hardest part is usually dealing with some passengers

3:01

who don't really understand why we give them certain instructions.

3:06

It's always hard to educate certain people, especially when they are unsure of what's happening.

3:17

If a kid in a gay listening loves to travel,

3:22

what's one thing they can do to be a great passenger on a plane?

3:29

I would say for kids, they should always talk to the crew.

3:34

No matter how shy they are, just go up to a crew and just talk to them

3:38

because they're the one person that can actually share so many things with you.

3:44

Anything that you want to know of a certain country, what to do in your destination that you're going to.

3:50

Believe it or not, they have a lot of insight on what to do in this new country that you're going to.

3:57

Do you get to sleep when you're on a flight

4:00

or do you have to stay up most of the time?

4:06

That's actually a really, really good question.

4:08

So believe it or not, in our airplanes, some aircraft has actually a bunk upstairs for us to sleep.

4:17

So we've got this special door that we open up and we actually head upstairs

4:22

and there are actually beds for us in the aircraft just for us to lie down.

4:28

But it's very, very small and I'd say it can get phosphophobic but we need the rest.

4:37

So I guess a lot of passengers don't know this but for us as a crew, we know about it.

4:43

I mean we're sleeping out there so that's something, I guess something that's a fun fact for people.

4:49

They actually don't know about this.

4:51

Interesting.

5:04

Okay, well it's time for our interactive segment.

5:07

Brendan, your job requires you to be ready to go at a moment's notice.

5:12

So we're going to play a speed game called Pack the Suitcase.

5:16

I'm going to give you a surprise destination

5:18

and you have 20 seconds to verbally pack your suitcase

5:23

telling us the most important things you bring.

5:26

Are you ready?

5:27

Yeah, I am.

5:29

Okay.

5:30

Your first destination is a sunny beach in Hawaii.

5:34

Go.

5:35

Definitely my passport.

5:37

Some higher than some sunscreen.

5:40

My bathing suit.

5:41

Pretty much I'm done with that.

5:43

Nothing else.

5:44

Alright.

5:45

Should we try another?

5:46

Sure.

5:47

Do you have one, Joy?

5:49

Hmm.

5:51

Your next destination is the rainforest.

5:58

Rainforest again.

5:59

My passport is going to be a must as for sure.

6:02

Probably some long pants and some long sleeves maybe.

6:04

At least if I'm going to go into the rainforest, I don't get bitten by things in there.

6:08

Yeah, that's it.

6:09

I don't need much.

6:11

All I just need is my passport at the end of the day.

6:14

Okay, how about one more?

6:16

The fjords of Norway.

6:19

Hmm, interesting.

6:21

I guess, passport.

6:23

My winter clothes.

6:25

That's for sure.

6:26

That's it.

6:28

Nothing else.

6:30

You got all this back light.

6:32

Yeah, that's what I'm noticing.

6:33

That'll all fit into the carry-on one.

6:35

Yeah.

6:37

Okay.

6:38

Well, that was fast.

6:39

You had to answer right away, but I'm noticing the theme of passport is the key there.

6:44

Definitely.

6:45

Passport.

6:45

Passport.

6:47

Passport.

6:47

Passport.

6:49

Before you go, we have two final questions.

6:53

What's the favorite part of your job?

6:58

I guess when you get older, earning money is something very important.

7:03

And when you get to travel and you get paid to travel, that's the best feeling ever.

7:10

So that's something that I really enjoy about the job.

7:13

And of course, meeting people.

7:17

And last, what advice would you give a kid in who might want to be a flight attendant when they grow up?

7:29

I would say if they're interested in knowing what's beyond their country that they're in right now,

7:38

I guess the best job would be to be a flight attendant.

7:40

When you get the option or when you get the freedom to travel, you start to learn more things

7:46

and you start to explore what are things out there that you may not see in your own country.

7:51

So I guess that's something that I would advise people to do.

7:57

Thank you.

7:58

Brendan, thank you so much for giving us an inside look to life as a flight attendant.

8:04

This was so cool.

8:06

Definitely.

8:07

It was my pleasure.

8:08

I guess happy travels, everyone.

8:09

And a huge thank you to our listeners.
