Welcome to What Do You Want to Be?

0:04

I'm Marc.

0:05

And I'm Joy.

0:07

Today, we're talking to someone who has one of the most important jobs in the entire

0:11

school.

0:12

Please welcome an amazing elementary school principal.

0:16

And she used to be a PE teacher.

0:19

Ms Unruh.

0:21

Hi Ms Unruh.

0:23

Hi Joy.

0:24

Hi Marc.

0:24

I'm so excited to be here.

0:26

Well, let's get started with some questions.

0:28

Joy.

0:30

What's your favorite part of being in the, of being a principal?

0:35

I would have to say that my favorite part of being a principal is building relationships

0:42

with kids and helping them to get better at being amazing people.

0:50

What is the hardest part of your job?

0:54

I think the hardest part of my job is being a good communicator.

0:59

So I have to communicate a lot in my job with students and parents and teachers, other

1:09

principals, sometimes with people who help support the school and making sure that

1:15

I communicate in a clear way that is understood by everyone.

1:21

And even thinking about how I communicate, should I send a chat message or an email?

1:28

Should I talk to that person in person or maybe send out a Google Doc with some information?

1:36

It takes a lot of effort to make sure that I'm communicating well.

1:42

What do you do all day?

1:44

Do you just sit in your office?

1:47

That's a really good question.

1:49

I walk around a lot.

1:51

I have a lot of meetings.

1:53

I do sit in my office.

1:55

Usually when I'm in my office, I'm answering emails or planning, but my favorite thing

2:02

to do in my office is when I get to meet with kids, whether it's because they're

2:06

having a problem or even just because they need help with something.

2:10

When I get to talk to kids and grownups in my office, that's my favorite thing

2:15

to do.

2:17

What's the silliest reason a student has ever been sent to your office?

2:25

That's a good question, Joy.

2:28

Well, I'm not sure that they got sent to my office, but I definitely had to talk

2:33

to kids on a lot of occasions about wearing their bare feet into the bathroom.

2:41

I thought that was pretty silly.

2:43

I'm a little gross.

2:47

That's hilarious.

2:51

What's something that would surprise us about your job?

2:58

Well, would it surprise you to know that for my job I need fidget toys?

3:11

I keep a whole basket of fidget toys in my office that I use whenever someone's

3:18

having really big feelings to help them be able to calm down, and maybe every

3:25

once in a while I even use the fidget toy if I'm having a big feeling.

3:29

Or to focus.

3:31

Or to focus.

3:32

Sometimes I use them to focus.

3:35

What's one thing you wish all your students knew?

3:42

Well, I wish all students knew that other kids have really good reasons for their

3:52

own feelings, and that sometimes when we think something is on purpose, most of

4:01

the time it's just an accident.

4:04

I think giving other people the benefit of the doubt is something I wish everyone

4:09

did more of at school.

4:14

What's the most rewarding or happy experience you've ever had as a principal?

4:26

Well, I am thinking about sometimes when I've had kids who were having really,

4:34

really big feelings, and they needed a grown-up to help them, and maybe they

4:40

were having a really big friendship fire with someone, and I got to help them

4:45

solve this problem with the other person.

4:48

So I listened to both people.

4:51

I had them say their own perspective.

4:54

They talked about what the problem was and what they thought the solution was,

5:00

and they came in having really big feelings that were at a 10, and when

5:06

they left, they were able to forgive each other.

5:10

They understood each other better, and they were calm, and that helped me.

5:15

I felt really like that was really rewarding for me to be able to help

5:20

someone else work through a big problem and feel better at the end of the day.

5:28

Okay, it's time for our interactive segment, and this one's a classic.

5:44

We call it principle for a day.

5:47

Joy gets to be the principal for a moment and make a fun new rule for the school.

5:52

Ms Unruh, your job is to tell us, as the real principal,

5:56

how would you announce the silly new rule to all the students?

6:00

Are you ready, Principal Joy?

6:01

Okay, my new rule is every Tuesday, everyone has to...

6:11

Huh?

6:13

On one foot in the hallway.

6:19

Okay, let me make sure I got this right.

6:22

Our new rule is that on Tuesdays, you can only off on one foot

6:27

when you're in the hallway. Is that right?

6:30

Yes.

6:31

Can I pretend that I'm your administrative assistant

6:36

and I'm making the announcement for you, Principal Joy?

6:39

Yes.

6:41

All right, here we go.

6:43

Good morning, boys and girls.

6:46

This is Ms Unruh coming to you from Principal Joy's office.

6:52

I have an announcement.

6:55

From here on out every Tuesday, all students, staff, and parents

7:02

will be required to hop on one foot

7:07

all throughout our hallways.

7:10

Remember, if you need any support with this new rule,

7:14

come see Principal Joy in her office and she'll be happy to let a hand or a foot.

7:23

Oh, that's amazing. I think students would love that.

7:27

Well, thank you. I think we have just a couple more questions.

7:30

Isn't that right, Joy?

7:31

Yep. Before we let you go, we have two final questions.

7:37

First, what is your favorite part about your job?

7:43

My favorite part of my job is the kids at my school.

7:49

I think I said this before, but anytime I get to talk to a kid, help a kid,

7:58

anytime I get to even tie somebody's shoes, any interaction I have with a kid,

8:05

that's my favorite part of my job.

8:11

Nice. And last, what advice would you give a kid who might want to be

8:19

a principal when they grow up?

8:21

Oh, this is a really good question.

8:23

I have two things I would give as a piece of advice.

8:26

Number one, be empathetic and practice empathy.

8:32

As a principal, it's really important to be able to empathize with the people around you.

8:39

So I might need to empathize with a kid who needs help.

8:45

I might need to empathize with the teacher, but being empathetic really helps make

8:51

the school not just a place where kids can learn a lot, but where there's a lot of kindness

8:58

and everyone's having a good time.

9:01

And my second piece of advice is to learn to be a good listener.

9:07

This was a surprise to me, but I really have to listen a lot.

9:12

And one of my favorite listening skills is paraphrasing,

9:16

which means saying back to someone what they just said to you.

9:20

It's important for me because then when I say back to you what you just said to me,

9:25

if I misunderstood you, you can correct me and then we'll both be on the same page.

9:31

And so since listening and communication are so important, I practice that a lot.

9:37

And I think for a kid who wants to grow up to be a principal,

9:40

you can start practicing your listening skills even now.

9:43

All right.

9:46

Well, Ms Unruh, thank you so much for giving us a peek behind the curtain of the principal's office.

9:53

This was so much fun.

9:55

Thank you.

9:56

The pleasure was all mine.

9:58

Keep being curious and keep learning.

10:01

And a huge thank you to our listeners.
